From Ohio State free safety and 2002 BCS National Champion to independent financial advisor and founder of BucFin.org — the story behind why this site exists, and the standard it holds every review to.
Leandre Boone — known to most as Lee Boone — was born in Suffolk, Virginia, on November 24, 1981. He grew up across Hampton Roads — Suffolk, then Portsmouth, then Norfolk — raised by a single mother alongside two brothers and a sister ahead of him. He's the baby of the family by six, ten, and fourteen years.
Basketball came first. Lee dreamed about the NBA the way every kid on every Hampton Roads court did. He didn't touch a football until his senior year of high school, when a track coach noticed his speed. From there: all-state honors, the Virginia High School All-Star Game, the Super 44 (the best of DC, Maryland, and Virginia), and a stop at Fork Union Military Academy before Ohio State came calling. He signed as the last freshman to commit during the 2001 signing period — added almost at the last minute to a class that was already set. He's still proud of that. Nobody hands you a spot like that; you have to be worth the risk.
Leandre Boone redshirted his first year at Ohio State, then played special teams in 2002 on the team that beat Miami in triple overtime for the BCS National Championship — 14-0 on the season, seven of those wins by seven points or less. They called their defense the Silver Bullets.
He played free safety — the last line of defense. That position is the literal foundation of the "Defense Wins Championships" philosophy that later shaped his financial practice. Coach Jim Tressel, now Lieutenant Governor of Ohio, put it this way:
"What I always tried to teach our players is that the discipline, the preparation, and the responsibility you develop on the field follows you everywhere — into your marriage, into your business, into how you protect your family. The game ends. The character doesn't. What Le Andre' has built with Buckeye Financial reflects exactly that."
— Coach Jim Tressel
During that championship season — not after it — Lee Boone discovered what he actually wanted to do with his life had nothing to do with football. A conversation with a man named Foster Blackman about the power of insurance struck something in him. He got his life and health insurance licenses and never looked back.
In 2005 he met his wife, Merrine — they share the same birthday, exactly one year apart. Her belief in him, and her business background, pushed him to bet on himself full-time rather than continue working fifty and sixty hours a week building someone else's company.
Leandre Boone founded Buckeye Financial LLC in October 2019, built on relationships with clients who trusted him enough to follow him into something new. His practice is built around a gap he saw in the industry: almost everyone in financial services focuses purely on accumulation, and almost nobody talks about protecting what people have already earned.
"What's the point of building something for forty years if you can lose a meaningful piece of it in a single moment — in the twinkling of an eye?"
Running an independent financial practice means running a real business — CRM, accounting, marketing, payroll, client presentations, all of it. Lee Boone built and evaluated that software stack the same way he approaches financial protection: with scrutiny, not hype, and a bias toward what's actually proven rather than what pays the highest commission.
BucFin.org grew out of that same standard. Every tool reviewed here is evaluated against the real operational needs of running an independent practice — some are tools running in Leandre Boone's own business today, others are carefully vetted picks for needs outside his own day-to-day stack. The site says clearly which is which, on every review, every time.
"I never just wanted to eat the pie. I wanted the recipe."
